VPN software (Virtual Private Network) is a business tool that allows remote access into a network for mobile employees or teleworkers. The software uses network tunneling to establish and maintain the connection. Information is sent in specific VPN protocol formats and encapsulated using a specific carrier protocol and de-encapsulated at the receiving location.
There are several different types of tunneling used by the various VPN packages. Sometimes these methods are combined for increased security.
Point-to-Point tunneling (PPTP) is used primarily by Microsoft. All Windows OS packages include some form of built-in client support for this protocol. Some business analysts have claimed that the PPTP doesn't provide sufficient security for today's business needs. Microsoft does continue to support and improve the technology.
Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) is a protocol used primarily by Cisco products. It provides businesses with secure connectivity involving minimum configuration requirements at the remote location.
Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) is a collection of related protocols used either as a complete VPN solution, or used as an encryption device with L2TP or PPTP technologies.
Major providers of Virtual Private Network software include:
- Astaro
- GoToMyPC
- Verisign
- Cisco Systems
- Microsoft
Criteria for choosing software include:
- Cost to implement
- Current network configuration. Small businesses and large businesses have different needs and need to be sure the VPN solution adapts to their specific requirements
- Ease of implementation.
- Security demands – different products claim different levels of security. Choosing a proven software provider will probably provide a higher level of security updates as network threats become more sophisticated.
- Scalability – will the software package meet your Business's long term growth plans
- Internal maintenance skill of your IT group
- Customer service and product support of the VPN package you select
- System resources: Not usually an issue, but sometimes small business environments are on over-taxed hardware already.
